Father Henri Voisin, Builder of Central Alberta

Abstract

Résumé Le père Henri Voisin, prêtre de Sainte-Marie de Tinchebray au nord de la France en Normandie, était un enseignant en histoire et aussi en anglais. Il est l’un de ceux de sa congrégation qui a accepté en 1904 l’invitation de Monseigneur Legal du diocèse de SaintAlbert à se rendre dans le centre de l’Alberta. Dans ce document nous examinerons les réalisations de Voisin dans trois domaines en particulier c’est-à-dire l’Église, l’éducation et la communauté en général. Il faut mentionner que l’Église dans les Prairies est devenue un point de ralliement pour les nouveaux arrivants dans l’Ouest canadien. La migration française contribua à la conservation de la langue française et à l’expansion du catholicisme dans les Prairies. Nous montrerons également dans ce mémoire qui était véritablement le père Henri Voisin, prêtre de la congrégation de Sainte-Marie de Tinchebray. Pourquoi lui et ses collègues religieux avaient - ils choisi de s’établir dans les régions du centre de l’Alberta alors que tout restait encore à faire sur plusieurs plans, bien au-delà de la religion catholique? Il y aura cependant un conflit à la suite de la nomination du premier archevêque anglophone d’Edmonton Monseigneur O’Leary en 1920 qui avait un plan afin d’angliciser son diocèse. Le père Voisin et sa congrégation quitteront éventuellement dans le centre de l’Alberta afin de se rendre à Tisdale en Saskatchewan. Abstract Father Henri Voisin, a priest from Sainte-Marie of Tinchebray, North of France in Normandie, was a History and an English teacher. He was one of his congregation that accepted in 1904 Bishop Legal’s invitation from the Saint-Albert diocese, to go to the Centre of Alberta. In this document, we will study the achievements of Voisin in areas mainly with the Church, Education, and the Community at large. We also must mention that the Church in the Prairies became a gathering Centre for people arriving in Western Canada. French migration contributed to the conservation of the French language and the expansion of Catholicism in the Prairies. We will also show in this Thesis who Father Voisin really was that is a priest from the congregation of Sainte-Marie of Tinchebray. Also, why did he and his religious colleagues chose to settle in the regions of Central Alberta. An area, where everything still needed to be done, well beyond the Catholic religion. Although a conflict will take place, following the nomination of the first English archbishop in Edmonton. Bishop O’Leary in 1920 had a plan to anglicize the diocese. Father Voisin and the members of his congregation will eventually choose to leave Central Alberta in order to settle in Tisdale Saskatchewan.
