Canada and Hong Kong have long shared close economic and people-to-people ties that have supported cultural exchange and mutual economic gain. Hong Kong also serves as a gateway between Canada and China, making the Canada-Hong Kong relationship key for Canada-China relations and the future of Canada’s economy. The value of Canada-Hong Kong trade totaled more than C$15 billion in 2019 and Hong Kong is one of Canada’s most important investment partners. The number of investments in Canada originating from Hong Kong surpassed those from mainland China in 2020 and 2021 for the first time since 2004, and, as of 2018, Hong Kong based businesses supported 22,295 jobs in Canada and contributed C$4.2 billion to Canadian annual GDP. Hong Kong is also home to the second largest community of Canadian Citizens living abroad, behind the US, and more than 500,000 Canadians living in Canada are of Hong Kong descent, which demonstrates the intensity of the Canada-Hong Kong relationship, particularly on the human side.
