Abstract

The focus of this thesis is on Québec historian Gérard Bouchard. More precisely, we are looking at the narrative structures and the historical imagination of several of his most important books of history as well as rapidly examining the narrative structure of his novels. Specifically, we are referring to the narrative structures of the historical imagination as defined by Hayden White in Metahistory. Did Bouchard reproduce the same historical imagination in both his history books and novels? Did writing in the 20th and early 21st history translate into a different structure of narration compared to historians for example of the 19th century? By looking at Bouchard’s history books as well as his novels, we are trying to verify Hayden White’s paradigm of Metahistory or the reproduction of universal structures of narration in a discipline where there is no possibility of progress since there are no limits for interpretation but only limits in the possibilities of narrative structures.
