Concision vs. Precision: Analysis of the French Translation of the Film The Adventures of Tintin by Steven Spielberg

Abstract

Description

This article analyses the methods used in the French translation of the animation The Adventures of Tintin by Steven Spielberg. The French translation of this film includes subtitling and dubbing. I will use Katharina Reiß’s framework to analyze and evaluate the quality of this work. Both the linguistic and non-linguistic factors related to this work will be discussed. Analysis of the subtitling is the primary focus of this essay while the dubbing will also be briefly discussed with the comparison of a few notable examples to illustrate the differences between these two strategies and the major constraints of audiovisual translation.
