Abstract

Description

SSHRC Awarded IDG 2018: Gay-Straight Alliances (GSAs) are a recent development in Canadian schools. These student-led clubs aim to promote positive youth development. They, and the recent legislation enabling them, are controversial. There is a need for research on the roles and effects of GSAs. This proposed research will examine the benefits of youth participation in Gay-Straight Alliances (GSAs) in the Edmonton Public School Board (EPSB) district. This project will examine the role of GSAs on students’ well-being, and on school and home relationships; examine the diversity of sexual and gender minorities and ethno-minorities attending the clubs ('inclusiveness'); compare gender and sexual minority students’ experiences with bullying and victimization between those attending GSAs and students in schools without GSAs. In order to answer the questions we will collect quantitative data using surveys and then conduct focus group and individual interviews. We aim to recruit a total of 100 youth participants who are Sexual and Gender Minorities (SGM) from 4 junior and senior high schools in the Edmonton district with existing GSAs and 4 junior and senior high schools in the Edmonton district with no existing GSAs.
