Abstract
Many immigrant families choose Canada as their destination, as it offers many opportunities to newcomers. These families are usually politically and economically integrated in the Canadian society, however for some, social and cultural integration is harder to attain. This study aims to understand second generation Afro-Canadian youth born in Canada, living in Alberta’s French minority, by examining different factors that influence their integration and their identity. The research findings suggest that there are some factors that make academic success and community involvement difficult. These factors include: parental influence, school belonging, hybrid identities and denied belonging. This study aims to encourage schools to implement procedures, policies and practices that will better meet the needs of second generation immigrant youth.
