dc.descriptionSSHRC Awarded IDG 2017: We propose to examine how Science- and Mathematics- textbook authors position themselves in relation to their hopes and challenges. In particular, we are interested in how the material they write might be a force or influence relating to their hopes (and challenges), especially in relation to peace and sustainability. Our research is qualitative, informed by narrative storytelling. We are interested in how the material textbook authors write might be an influence relating to their hopes (and challenges), especially in relation to peace and sustainability. To focus this question, we will ask Canadian science and mathematics textbook authors: 1. What are your hopes for students, for society and for the environment? 2. What challenges will students face in terms of these hopes? 3. How do your hopes appear in the text you write as an author? 4. What challenges and insights have you experienced while trying to integrate your hopes into your writing? We will also draw participants’ attention to the sustainable development goals (SDGs) developed by the United Nations (https://sustainabledevelopment.un.org/sdgs) to further prompt them to relate how they think about these universal and almost universally-accepted goals.
