Abstract
Description
This paper briefly examines various perspectives on digital libraries in order to discuss what constitutes a digital library, the value or necessity of digital libraries, and how digital libraries differ from physical libraries. Critical avenues for examining key socio-technological aspects of digital library “history” pertaining to access to information are introduced. While there is little disagreement digital libraries hold immense promise; the pre-eminent challenge for Library and Information Science/Studies (LIS) professionals in the digital age will be the development of culturally appropriate digital libraries that utilize the knowledge traditions and meet the unique needs of diverse user communities around the world.
