Extreme weather events, particularly tornadoes and windstorms, pose significant risks to vulnerable populations, including the elderly, individuals with disabilities, the unhoused, and low-income households. Vulnerable groups often lack access to resources necessary for emergency preparedness, exacerbating their susceptibility to adverse outcomes during such events. This project aims to enhance communication and preparedness efforts for severe weather events in Camrose, Alberta, where a sizable portion of the population falls into these vulnerable categories. With guidance from the City of Camrose officials and Camrose’s Climate Vulnerability and Risk Assessment Report, the project includes creating an accessible emergency shelter map as well as an emergency preparedness kit video to help prepare and guide citizens in the event of an emergency. Through these initiatives, we hope to empower vulnerable populations with the knowledge and resources necessary to mitigate risks and ensure their safety during extreme weather events.
