Placing a small-scale Vertical Axis Wind Turbine on roof-top corner of a building

Abstract

Description

The current study demonstrates the very high performance of Vertical-Axis Wind Turbine (VAWT) on the roof-top corner of a building using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). A small-scale VAWT with high rotational velocity is validated using the SST k-ω turbulence model. It is shown that this turbulence model can predict the flow field around and the performance of the turbine accurately in comparison with experimental results. By locating the turbine on the corner of the building and having the wind at an angle of 45° with respect to the face of the building, it is found that the power coefficient of the turbine increases significantly at higher values of Tip Speed Ratios (TSRs). Nevertheless, it is found that by doubling the Aspect ratio (AR) of the turbine, its performance decreased.
