Abstract
A ‘safety net’ and a key system entry point to access care for alcohol-related events, the emergency department (ED) can play an important role in the early identification of harmful effects of adolescent alcohol use thus making it crucial to understand the clinical care experiences of pediatric emergency physicians and their attitudes and beliefs towards providing alcohol-related care. This thesis includes two studies, a systematic review examining literature on the attitudes and beliefs of ED health care providers towards patients with alcohol-related presentations and a descriptive, qualitative study conducted with pediatric emergency physicians exploring their clinical care experiences when providing alcohol-related care to adolescents in the ED. These studies demonstrated that physicians’ attitudes, beliefs, and experiences can influence care provided to adolescents presenting to the ED for alcohol use.
