Abstract
Description
SSHRC IDG awarded 2023: The objective of this project is to develop an enriched model for aesthetic assessment of natural sites that will fill serious gaps in the assessments produced by models currently used in Canada and North America by conservation, landscape, and development planners, which prioritize visual over all other perceptual qualities of nature. The solution is to give up the traditional models which treat nature as a collection of scenic views or sculptures, in favor of treating nature as a potent choreographer staging multilayered dynamic performances by animate and inanimate beings in particular places and spaces. The end result should be more nuanced and inclusive decisionmaking by conservation authorities.
