SSHRC PEG awarded 2024:The purpose of this project is to survey the archaeological landscape of a region which until recently was mistakenly thought to be of marginal importance. The survey has yielded a plethora of results proving the contrary. It includes the discovery of two sites of exceptional importance: Arabises, a multi-period site, and Platanos Magoula, a Neolithic settlement. Both sites are under threat by industrial scale solar panel installations for which the terrain will be levelled by bulldozers, destroying the archaeological record. Our overarching goal is to increase the archaeological visibility of both Arabises and Platanos Magoula, by generating and using high quality archaeological data to pursue their protection and conservation.
