In Canada’s increasingly global society, learning Japanese is becoming increasingly popular in schools and post-secondary institutions. Many Canadians believe that learning this new language will enhance their understandings of aspects of Japanese life and culture. Often, students of Japanese as an additional language find it a challenging experience because of different writing, speaking, and reading styles for people with alphabetic backgrounds. They discover that kanji (Chinese characters) recognition is time-consuming hard work because they need to know not only how to write kanji; but also the meaning, pronunciation, stroke order, and compound use. My poster presentation will present an overview of my study to explore students’ Japanese language learning experiences.
