Description
Ceramic building materials such as bricks, pipes and roof tiles are commonly found on Jordanian archaeological sites, yet generally these materials have generated very little interest from archaeologists1. This lack of study is unfortunate given that, just like any other artifacts, the appearance of ceramic building materials varies in relation to their time and place of manufacture. This article presents the current state of a project, begun by the authors, to analyze the ceramic building materials (henceforth referred to as CBM) from Wādī Ramm and al-Ḥumayma (FIG. 1). The selection of these two sites for study was based both on the availability of the material and the important fact that the material from these two sites spans the Nabataean, Roman, Byzantine and perhaps Umayyad periods in southern Jordan.
