Abstract
This thesis concerns the possible contribution to ethics of the first two books of Roger Lemelin, Au pied de la pente douce and Les Plouffe. The contribution is framed by the Socratic question “how should we live?” and the Rawlsian process of reflective equilibrium between the institutions and the members of a society. Within this context, the most evident role for literature in general is to expand the field of reflection through the imagination of the reader.
The principal contribution of the two books is to bring out the nuances of the interaction between the institutions and the members of the society. Notably, the most important institutions have a local, physical presence. As for the people, in order to arrive at a notion of a good life and to express it, capacities of rationality and reasonableness need to be developed through both formal and informal education.
